Many Connecticut mothers tune in daily to a morning news program called Better Connecticut. You would think a program with this kind of title, would actually carry a positive, and educated message to the mothers, and residents of the state. Unfortunately Tuesday morning that wasn’t the case.
Scot Haney, a clearly male news personality, and a quite popular one at that, made a comment about never riding the Amtrak line again after there was a nursing mother breastfeeding her baby next to him on the train. Um… GASP! Holy shit! A baby that had to actually eat?
I am not sure if Mr. Haney knew this, but that breastfeeding mother was not only doing what is best for her baby, but she was well within her legal right to feed her baby on that train. And shame on any local news personality to criticize a nursing mother on live television. Especially on a show with a title like Better Connecticut.
Maybe the show should consider issuing an apology for the asshat comment that Scot made about this woman, and try to make up for it with a segment about the benefits of breastfeeding, and how it is the healthiest option for babies?
As a Connecticut resident, and local Connecticut writer… I am ashamed, and embarrassed for WFSB and the News 3 Family for the actions of Scot.
Shame on them, and you can bet I won’t be tuning in to their show anymore!
What a piece of work. I mean honestly. It not as if she offered him a sip. I lived in the outer Boston area when my Ds was born. I nursed several times on a very crowded “T” and never got a crossways look. This guy needs a reality check. Is he married, does he have any kids?
I did have a jerk one time up in first class(I got a complimentary upgrade) make a comment to a flight attendant he was uncomfortable with me feeding my 3 month old child. I was 2 seats directly behind him. He only saw me because he got up to take a leak. I leaned forward and said “sir, you have a choice; live with being uncomfortable from me feeding my child or uncomfortable when everyone else on the plane wants to kick your butt fo listening to a hungry baby scream for the next 3 hours.” That shut him up quick enough and the flight attendant smiled.
That is sooooo disappointing because I really like Scot.
I’ll have to send him an angry email.
i can not BELIEVE that!!!! i want to write them…
darcy´s last [type] ..Teething Hurts
Thank you for spreading the word about this. Hopefully wsfb will get the message loud and clear, comments such as Scot’s are ignorant and prejudiced. Let’s hope they now choose to normalize breastfeeding in their reporting.
@Gretchen – He is actually an openly gay man… Even more surprising, and upsetting!

Good morning! Now why is it surprising that an ‘openly gay’ man would say something like that? Surely you don’t mean to stereotype.
I’m glad to see that I wasn’t the only mother offended by this, especially since i was breastfeeding my daughter while hearing him say that. I went right to the better ct website and wrote a letter much like yours. I’m curious to see if he makes an apology.
Not not stereotype, but for a group that is continually suppressed and limited, like nursing mothers, you would think he would bite his tongue, or be more accepting.
I have sent emails, phone calls and facebook posts…no response yet! Although 2 freinds have sent emails directly to him and they received the SAME response. “It was a joke!” I’m sorry but nothing of what he said sounds very funny to me! Keep sending emails, phone calls, fb posts. He and Channel 3 need to get the message LOUD and CLEAR!
This is what he posted on ALL the posts on the facebook page regarding his comments…
Hey, it’s Scot Haney! I just found out that people were upset about my comments! I’m so sorry, I never meant to offend anyone. Of course you have the right to breast feed your children anywhere you deem appropriate. I come from a family of all men, my mom was the only female in the house and we didn’t talk about these things, no less see this situation when I was growing up. I just wasn’t prepared for the situation. Please keep in mind, this was a long time ago – now things are different. I really was just joking! I will continue to ride Amtrak! I hope you continue to watch and have a “Better” day!
I’ll begin by saying I breastfed my 2 daughters who are now in their 40′s. Actually, I was one of the moms who began sharing the news to get the kids off the bottles.
But, when I would breastfeed, NO ONE even knew it! All one has to do is throw a (in my case cloth diaper) over the shoulder and no one can see a thing.
Is it actually necessary to announce to others what breastfeeding moms are doing – does it make them feel better about themselves?
Yes, it is a “normal” thing – but we should also be aware of others’ feelings on this matter. All that really matters is that the children are getting breastfed and the moms don’t need approval or a medal for doing this. The approval will be from the child who will grow up healthier and stronger.
IMHO
Robyn seems to have a bug up her butt. She appears “intelligent” yet didn’t grasp what you were referring to? How odd. Of course someone who is gay would understand the harsh treatment received from others the same as Jewish people would, breastfeeding mothers would, the elderly, the handicapped, etc. etc. Nothing you said was stereotypical at all. It was accurate. You would think an openly gay man would be one of the last people to pick on another group, in this case, breastfeeding mothers.

Oh PLEEEEZE, spare me the drama. I breastfed all my babies for just over a yr each. Breastfeeding is no comparison to handicapped, jewish or even gay people or the elderly but thanks for the morning laugh.
Actually Robyn, a recent study shows that breastfeeding mothers are often discriminated against, and thought to be less competent when compared to formula feeding mothers. They are often passed for jobs, etc. But that is a whole other post in itself.

Interesting, where did you get your data to back this up? It certainly has not been my experience. Do you also feel the discrimination is comparable to the handicapped, elderly, gays and even Jews?
@Robyn – Well a couple posts on this information :
http://blogs.babble.com/strollerderby/2011/03/24/mothers-who-breastfeed-viewed-as-incompetent-less-likely-to-be-hired/
I am sure if you google “Breastfeeding study, less competent” it will come up since it was a recent publication. It was in the the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.
As for your other question… I dont think they are necessarily comparable, but certainly are similar. Discrimination, is discrimination.
This is an interesting discussion. I do not have children, but I am aware that what you say in public and how you think and act on work time needs to be chosen very carefully to avoid the alleged misunderstandings that the apology suggested. Most professional adults know better than to.do that and they do not need their ignorance about the subject to fall back on as their excuse. I am only a few years younger than Scot and it wasn’t a topic or a scenario that I witnessed or discussed with having one sister and my Mom home until.she went to school. Just like watching the news, if there is something that is making you feel uncomfortable happening before your eyes, then either close them or look away. Simple and inoffensive.
