I hate clutter! Stuff, crap, CLUTTER! And it is TAKING OVER my house. Well, it took my house over… shortly after we moved in and I have been battling it since. I have this deep desire to purge almost everything I own right now just because it is in my way, and obstructing what I really want to do with my house, and this weekend is the start of the end.
I am putting together boxes for tag sales, I am getting donation bins ready, and I am going to be stalking Pinterest every step of the way for everything I want to do. I just cannot stand it all anymore, I want my house to be what it has potential to be!
I want to turn my “home office corner” of my living room into this…

Clearly minus the white rug, there is no way I can have anything white in my house with these kids, especially since the other half of my living room is dedicated to being a play room although my husband wants to ban toys, and turn the boys bedroom into their play room. Thoughts on that?
And speaking of the boys room… I want to do something like a friend of mine did with her boys and put them in a bunk bed type situation like this:

More themed with their stuff, cars, fire trucks, and most of all, freeing up a TON of room in their bedroom. Except There would be a mattress on the bottom level as well. I would really be sad to see my 3 year olds bed go, but it would save so much room. And 9 times out of 10 I find Ben sleeping on the floor on the fire truck couch they have in their room.
Once we get the bed thing situated… I will be heading to Ikea for this to help get their toys more organized:

And lastly for their room, I will be gutting their closet, and turning it into a little reading nook. They have TONS of books, and while they can’t read, I am sure they would really enjoy this. It will also give me good shelving options to store things in an area they cannot reach!

We don’t have a ton of room in the bedrooms, in fact my husband and I originally gave the kids the biggest room in the house, until they decided they wanted to sleep in our room. And for the time being we sleep in a blue, and lime green starry night themed bedroom… Can you tell that is totally on my list of projects to do too?
For the kitchen… man my kitchen is a lost cause. I hate my kitchen. There is no cabinet space, no storage room, and no matter where we put our kitchen table it just doesn’t look right. I am thinking we need to bring the round kitchen table back up from the garage, and find a nice fabric table cloth for it. Because the square one just isn’t working. But I will be doing this for decoration, and organization this weekend:

Just gotta figure out which wall to put it on. My dad is already searching for a piece of plywood big enough. But with the way I plan meals, this will probably be a lifesaver to get me into the swing of the way I should be doing things. I am also going to start shopping around for a stand up cabinet for the kitchen as well… we need more storage room… whether we use it for food, or our pots and pans. It is a complete necessity.
Anyone else out there with me in this project of purging all the old crap that has accumulated over the years?
Here’s my deal. We are moving at the beginign of next year so I will purge as I pack, but I hear ya on the house being taken over. WHat kills me is that the new place will probably be bigger than this one so it’s going to seem empty.
My living room is also the play room and while I would love to get my living room back, I have to wait. I WILL have a dining room in the next place which I WILL turn into a play room because we have no real need for a dining room.
If you go to Big Lots they have a tall standing cabinate for under $200. I like it because it will be easier to keep locked so I can put all the things I don;t want the kids to get into.
LOVE the photos you found (organized stuff just makes me really happy:) I agree with Will about keeping your living room as toy free as possible…..that’s what we will do when we move into our house. All Kami’s toys will stay in her bedroom until we finish off the basement. Go with bunk beds! It will save a ton of space and has worked out really well for Evie & Addie and Taye & Jack. And the reading nook is a really cute idea (as long as you have room for clothes somewhere)! I also love the menu board (I have been looking for something to plan out our weekly meals on too…but I have like 0 wall space in our tiny kitchen). I can’t wait to start going through and getting rid of all the crap we have when we move in the next couple of weeks! Happy Organizing! xo
My house is VERY tiny. No toys are allowed in my living room at all. (My youngest, a boy, is 9) My daughter and son both have small rooms though my sons is by far much smaller so to maximize floor space, both children have loft beds.
Each closet has 2 rails for maximizing storage space. Everything has a place and is (usually) in it by the end of the day. Admittedly my house isn’t tidy often but I can find things since I enforce keeping the mess down to manageable.
We are big on totes for storage, giving away toys often and purging my son’s toybox every season. It’s the same with clothes. We find others that need and recycle everything. We also don’t bring a lot back into the house.
I hope this helps some
Good luck!
@Kaitlyn – We don’t use the closet in their room for clothes, both boys have drawers, and then one uses the stand up armoire, so I am not worried about losing the closet.
I priced out the bunk bed idea, and it looks affordable sometime this fall, hopefully by October. Although with a possible change of job coming up for Will, who knows what the upcoming months will bring!
My friend had a 3 bedroom house and 3 girls. All 3 girls shared a bedroom (bunkbeds and a single) and the other bedroom was the playroom. They also used it for a study room once the girls got older and put in 3 of those old fashioned school desk/chairs, so each girl had their own workspace. It worked great. Toys were not allowed in the living room or anywhere else in the house, other than the playroom.
