Maternity Shirt from the Forever 21 Line
Recently the popular clothing chain Forever 21 announced they will be launching a new Maternity clothing line. Who thought this would have turned into a major controversy? I certainly didn’t until I read this yesterday. Basically this writer is insisting this maternity line is for teens and in turn encouraging teen pregnancy.
Last time I checked, I am not a teen, and I shop at the popular mall based chain store. Along with places like H&M, and whatever peaks my interest that week. But not one time have I thought that only teens shop at the popular chain. In fact most of the times I have been in there shopping, with my kids in tow, I see more older women, or 20 something’s in there than teens. Even right down to the workers.
I was shocked then I saw someone implying that Forever 21 is encouraging or being more acceptable of teen pregnancy because they are making a maternity line. All this means is that older women like me that do not really care for the traditional maternity clothes that are typically sold in stores like Motherhood Maternity will not be forced to shop their grandma-esk type styles at marked up prices. Granted there probably some teens out there that will shop this maternity line, but it hardly is going to encourage them to get pregnant. A hand full of maternity tops and stretch pants is hardly persuasive enough to do that.
Either way, I think that author of that completely is missing the point that most of the people shopping there are not teens by any means, simply because the name of the store is Forever 21.

Agreed. I shop there too and I’m thrilled that they’ll be carrying non-ugly maternity clothes. The Motherhood Maternity clothes are so PUKE.

That is just crazy. I am almost in my 30′s and get a lot of clothes from forever 21. I would have loved if they had a materntiy line last year when I was expecting my first child. People are seriously twisted, making things into something they are not.

I totally agree with you! I am 44 and have a 6 month old so I just went through the “OMG the maternity clothes are freakishly ugly what are these people thinking” fiasco. Most of what I wound up getting were non-maternity,baby doll style tops. Cute tops from places like Forever 21 would be a God send. Whomever thinks this is encouraging teen pregnancy really needs to get their head on straight. :^/
I am almost 30, and shop at Forever 21. Whenever I am there, I see a mix of people, both young and old. I am actually happy they are finally launching a maternity line! Both times I was pregnant, I had wished they had one. Next time, I know where I’m getting my maternity clothes.
And about the controversy, well, people will find a controversy in everything.
I seriously cannot believe that the association was seriously made. I think it is great that they are doing a maternity line. Ive been pregnant for like a million years and one of my favorite shirts is a billowy non maternity one my mother bought me from 4ever 21.
And I am an old professional woman. ick people can be so lame but you said it best and im super happy to hear there is a new maternity alternative.

I believe where the controversy came in is not that they’re selling them but that the only stores carrying them “just happen” to be the 5 states with the highest teen pregnancy rates. The company insists that that was not intentional, but c’mon: their stores primarily market to teens so of course they’re going to want to put their products somewhere where their primary market is concentrated.
That said, do I occasionally shop there and might I look through their maternity line myself? Yes. Are their other adult women who shop there? Clearly. Do teenage girls who are pregnant need clothes that fit them and their style? Sure. But, that all said, I can understand why some parents feel like this particular way of marketing is condoning or encouraging teen pregnancy.

Seriously, the fact that a link was made – and further more a controversy is completely ludicrous. Forever 21 also recently came out with a “plus-size” line (called, Faith 21) – if someone is going to make the connection between cute maternity clothing and increased teenage pregnancy, then the same should/can be said about a plus-sized line and adolescent obesity. In other words, it’s completely ridiculous.
Outside of that, it looks super cute – and I’m thankful that they created such a line, so I don’t have to shop a Motherhood Maternity!
I agree. I shop at Forever 21 & just recently bought a ton of tanks and shirts that work great with nursing!

i do not think it promotes teen pregnancy the store is just about fashion and come one when i was pregnant (i am not a teen i was pregnant at 27) i wanted fashionable clothes. i just did not want to ware the big t-shirts…i still wanted to look good
Agreed. I shop there & I love that they have a maternity line now! If I have another child, I will be shopping there for sure (I’m 35).
Also, I have never seen a single teen shopping when I have been in the store.
When I was pregnant and living in Ireland, I shopped for maternity clothes at H&M and Topshop, both of which are marketed to teens and young women. I was 25 at the time… Why does carrying youthful maternity clothes mean a shop is condoning teen pregnancy? Plenty of women, all through the range of childbearing years, want and need stylish maternity clothes. Shops exist to sell clothes to those women. Where’s the problem?
Anyone who thinks a teenage girl is going to get pregnant purely so that she can wear that cute maternity top has a very low opinion of teenage girls indeed.
I think the main reason that the controversy has sprung up is not the line but the fact that they have chosen to launch the line in the states with the highest incidence of teenage pregnancy. Would seem a little unseemly to me from a marketing standpoint. Not like they went out and said we are going to go nationwide or online. But specifically targeted those states.
I love forever 21, and i am 29 years old and i glad they have a maternity section now, maybe one day when i decide to have a baby they are still around so i can get nice clothes for less, because yes, Motherhood clothes are ugly and expensive. But NO i don’t think this clothing line encourage anyone to have babies (teens) they have them becaue they want to. I just think it was about time they had nice clothes for pregnant women!!
I couldn’t agree more. I’m 30, and I’ve shopped at Forever 21 for years! I used to buy a ton of work clothes there. They have cute stuff and it’s cheap! Now that I’m pregnant again, I’m psyched that they have a maternity line and I am nowhere near a teenage mom. I find the premise that their line promotes teen pregnancy utterly absurd.
