If you guys remember, when it was getting close to Jenn’s due date, I took the time to write out a couple questions for a Before the Baby Interview. Of course I thought it would be fun to follow up with Jenn in her journey to motherhood, especially because I got to hang out with her and Lil’ J at BlogHer. (Even better, I got to learn Lil’ J’s real name, but my lips are sealed!)
And I would have to say, Lil’ J was by far one of the best dressed at BlogHer. Including all of us adults. This skirt was totally my favorite out of all I saw her in!
On to the interview!
Hook us up with some Stats for Lil’ J at her birth?
She was 9lbs 9oz and 20.5 in long.
Are you ready for motherhood and breastfeeding?
I’m learning as I go, but as ready as I’m going to be. Breastfeeding is different than I expected it to be, I’m hoping to relax and enjoy this though.
How is breastfeeding going for you?
Breastfeeding is having its ups and downs. I wasn’t breastfed and a year seems like a long commitment sometimes but I’m trying to take it day by day. My goal is three months right now (through my maternity leave) and hopefully I’ll add on from there. I just started adding pumping to the equation too so I can stock up a little supple before going back to work.
How was your birth experience overall?
I was happy with my birth experience. I think I over-thought some things, and got myself more worked up than I needed to. Granted, I think all of my research helped me be more informed and helped me feel like I was in charge of my birth experience. I think having my actual doctor who I trusted there to deliver my baby as well as having great staff helped me to feel comfortable and have a good experience.
How do you feel about pitocin looking back on it now?
I think pitocin is great when used appropriately. I think if you know your Bishop score, and still try to do other things to help progress like walk around, or use a yoga ball or things like that-As I did, it could help make it more effective. My contractions were real intense but since I hadn’t really experienced any other “real” contractions I didn’t really notice the difference. I was able to handle the pitocin longer than I thought. We turned off the pitocin toward the end and my contractions started to fade. It made me feel reassured about my decision to get induced when I did.
Do you feel like your Lamaze Class helped prepare you for your labor?
It helped for sure! I learned about so much more than just breathing. I learned about relaxing, creating rituals to get through the contractions, and the pros and cons about medical interventions. The breathing techniques I learned though, and different technique to cope with contractions helped me go as long as I did without an epidural. I was never planning to go the whole way without one (an epdural), but I wanted to be prepared incase I decided to.
How did your husband handle childbirth & helping you through labor?
My husband was nervous but he stepped it up when he needed to. He comforted me, got me what I needed, and encouraged me through my contractions. Every time he told me I was doing a good job I really felt good.
Looking back on what you described your idea birth as, how did your experience measure up?
I think I had my ideal birth. It may not have been what I wrote before having her, but after having her all I can really think about is the experience I had and how it was perfect. It definitely was better than I imagined it going, and I feel like I could have 10 more babies that way!
Anything else you would like to share?
I really loved my birth! I had a lot of fun. I hope that anyone about to have a baby would just do some figuring out of things you’d like in a birth experience and how you can get that. Also, find a caregiver you can talk to and trust. I’m so happy I got my healthy baby, it’s a plus that her birth was absolutely amazing as well.
Thanks to Jenn for taking the time to talk to us about her birth experience, and motherhood! Maybe we can check in with Jenn again in a couple months and see how Lil’ J and her are fairing through going back to work, and mobile childhood!
