Organic? Out of Reach for Low Income Families!

Yesterday I was watching a discussion on twitter taking place about the price of Organic foods, and foods that are actually good for us and our children to be eating, and how for the average low income family, it is simply not affordable for them to make the choice to eat healthy.  We have recently started to change over to as much organic and healthy foods as we can as a family, but it is no secret shopping at WholeFoods or Trader Joes is not always affordable for all the groceries or food needs we need for a week. We are still recovering from my husband’s lay off nearly a year after he went back to work, and also dealing with a pay cut from what we made. While life is good, money can sometimes still be an issue.

With our former income, it would have been no problem to go and drop $300 at WholeFoods for two weeks worth of groceries. But this brings me to one of the most interesting discussions I have seen in a while. Unhealthy eating is so affordable, yet eating organic, or foods that aren’t genetically modified is so unaffordable for some families.

You can drive through McDonalds, and feed a family of 4 for $5. But if you want to buy grass fed, organic, locally grown beef, you are spending at least $6.99 a pound for ground beef, and that is not including the other ingredients you need for your meal. So this is encouraging families to not eat the way they maybe should be.

In the documentary Food Inc. there is a family features discussing this issue. You can get a bottle of soda for $.99 cents but a head or broccoli is going to run them $2.49.  It just doesn’t make sense.

Our government should be helping lower these prices and encouraging people to eat healthy, especially when there is so much focus on curbing childhood obesity. There is such a focus on junk food, soda, and everything else going on right now, why not spend more time focusing on making the good foods affordable for the families that are more likely to suffer from obesity… the low income families.

Our economy may slowly be recovering, but the way people live is not. We have large numbers of obese people, large numbers of children in our country that cannot identify simple vegetables, and kids that will refuse to eat unless their meal comes in a bag with a toy.

If you want to curb obesity, the price of foods is where it needs to start!

Horizon Organic Chocolate Milk Review

I recently had the opportunity to review Horizon’s new product, which myself, and my toddler greatly enjoyed.  Horizon on their website describe the product as :

“Mmm chocolate! Horizon Organic® Lowfat Chocolate Milk Plus DHA Omega-3 provides a great-tasting and easy way to add calcium and DHA to your family’s diet. DHA Omega-3 is an important nutrient that helps support heart, brain and eye health. “

When they say Mmm they mean it!  My toddler took a drink of it, only after I tried it first, and the first word or sound out of him was “Mmmmmm Mommy”!

But even more than just the product, I like that Horizon not only is 100% organic, and environmentally conscious, but they work with only local organic farmers from over 500 small family farms all over the country, instead of the large, non animal friendly type dairy farming we are seeing nation wide.

The nutritional value of added DHA as well as Omega 3 is another benefit, which to me makes the sugar content more acceptable. While some may not feel the same, limiting the sugar in moderation is not harmful.

So between my taste buds, and the two year old who runs the house, the Horizon Organic Chocolate Milk gets two big thumbs up from us!

Keep your eyes pealed for a giveaway here on Momotics from Horizon in the upcoming months!
