Dr. Stuart Fischbein on the Momotics Radio Show

This coming Wednesday evening for the continued celebration of Cesarean Awareness Month, I am going to have a special hour long radio show with California OB/GYN Dr. Stuart Fischbein discussing VBAC, Cesarean Sections, and maternity care in the United States.

I am hoping that some of my readers will take some time not only to call in to the show this week, but submit questions by commenting on this post, or e-mailing them to me directly at Danielle.Elwood@gmail.com .

If you are not familiar with Dr. Fischbein you can check out his blog

Now, ladies!  Go to work!

Weekly Round Up

Today in light of Easter, I am just throwing something simple together instead of my normal lengthy week ending posts.

In our house :

  • Mission to lose weight has been launched.
  • We started planting our garden.

Around the blogs :

Be sure to tune in tonight to myself on The Feminist Breeder’s Radio show, a little late for us on the east coast as it is on at 11pm EST but it will be a lot of great information. I will be discussing the cesarean feelings survey that I have been actively working on with The Healthy Baby Network.

Also, be sure to tune in this coming Wednesday April 7th at 10pm EST for author Isa Hererra on my radio show. She recently published “Ending Female Pain” which is an amazingly informative book for women regarding female associated genital pain, sexual dysfunction, and helping to heal.

Joy Szabo, NIH, & What Wasn’t Addressed

Last night I was lucky enough to have a 45 minute slot with Joy Szabo on my radio show. I was certain people would call in with questions to ask her about her experience, but it seemed as though the National Institute of Health VBAC Conference has really been overshadowing the whole week, especially in the birth and activism community who happen to be the main readers of my blog!
So half way through the show, when I realized that no one was calling in with questions for Joy, after talking about her story, feelings, and experience, we turned the table over to the final draft letter from the NIH panel.

That is when the show started to pick up, because people are MAD!  No matter how many times the same topic was brought up, it was left out not only in the draft letter, but in essentially their revised draft. While we do not know if it will make it into the final statement, most of us are not optimistic.
The topic?  Women being able to make their own choices, and say NO to their provider, repeat surgery, and NOT have to go through any type of legal recourse or court ordered intervention like we are we are slowly starting to see in our country.

It was brought up yesterday morning during the time in where the audience was able to make comments, suggestions, and ask questions, but again brought up during the Press Conference by Susan Jenkin’s from The Big Push for Midwives.  During the press conference panel members continued to dodge the question, and comments once again.

Now most of us went into this whole week not expecting much from the conference because many of us have been down this road, and knew that change is often not something that comes about, but after the first couple speakers, slides which included pictures of the ICAN logo and the banner from The Unnecesaean, many of us were smiling ear to ear hoping, and praying this would really be the step we needed. By day 3 it turned clear that it would not be what many of us would have liked to happen.

The one positive I find that came from this was the final suggestion for ACOG to revisit and revise their statement including immediate terminology, to something that is much more realistic in our medical community today.

We got a little carried away in the show last night, and went over our time limit, but I wanted to again thank those who did come on the show, speak, and bring a great discussion. Joy Szabo for bringing the issue of VBAC Bans into the mainstream media, Traci Perg for being so passionate, outspoken, and bringing up amazing points about modern day feminists, as well as pro choice supporters, Lauren Cooper, current Chapter Director for ICAN and her reflections on the conference. Lauren is a good friend of mine, as well as a great mentor, and she will be coming back on in April for one of the radio shows focusing on Cesarean Awareness Month, and last but certainly not least, Sarah from Salisbury Connecticut, a local doula, friend and advocate in my community.

Tell everyone what you think about the panel’s statement and leave a comment!

PS!  Please, please please!  If you have had a cesarean section, take our Post Cesarean Feelings Survey, it will ONLY be available till Monday March 15th, and we are trying to hit between 1000 and 1500 mothers!  Pass it along on Facebook, to your friend, family, or clients!

Barbara Harper on the Momotics Radio Show

Earlier this week, I was able to sit down with the World famous Birth Pioneer, and Author Barbara Harper. I must admit to being star struck and nervous as she is someone who I have looked up to since getting involved in the Birth Community.
I think Gentle Birth Choices is one of the first books I bought when I started my journey to become a doula.

I sat down during the day to write a couple questions and hope that I could keep the conversation going for a half hour, in reality, two questions took the whole show.

I must say though, I will definitely be having her back on the show.
And next time we will need an hour slot!

Tonight Nicole from Your Birth Right

Many women do not realize when it comes to birth, especially in a hospital setting, they have rights other than what the staff tells them, of asks them to do or consent to. We are seeing this more and more in recent years with the scary birth climate our country has.

Tonight on the Momotics Radio Show at 10pm EST (Remember Eastern Standard Time!!!) I will be sitting down to talk with Nicole Deggins who is the founder of Your Birth Right, and is also a Nurse Midwife, labor and delivery nurse, and a women’s advocate for over 15 years.  Her site offers so much awesome information to help empower women in their birth experiences.

If you want to tune in to our show tonight, you can follow THIS LINK to a direct connection to the show once it starts.

If you would like to call in, we will be taking callers also. The phone number to call in is 347-633-9804

I can’t wait to have fun!

When Feminists Draw a Line…

Since I have been a “member” of the feminism community, I have noticed a trend that is not seeming to change. The number of feminists that stop the fight for rights, and choice at abortion. Once a woman makes the decision to continue a pregnancy, they stop fighting for those rights. Now granted, not all feminists are like that. But this really has sparked thoughts in myself, as well as Gina, better known as The Feminist Breeder. Fitting blog title huh?

I found Gina through ICAN, but most people have stumbled upon her blog long before. But what drew me in the most was the amount of similar views that we shared. I was in instant … sistermance?  Is that kind of compatible to bromance? You get the point…

Yesterday she wrote an amazingly awesome blog about exactly what we are going to talk about tomorrow night, I encourage everyone to go over to her blog and read : I’ve Been Annoyed with Feminist This Week .  She in short articulates everything that I wanted to say. We have these giant woman’s rights organizations going to bat over the stupid 30 second Tim Tebow & Focus on the Family ad for the Super Bowl, but when it comes to an 11 minute segment on an elective cesarean section, or a 5 minute segment on water birth, both giving out horrid information to the mainstream public, screw that… it isn’t important enough.

I am so grateful for groups like The National Advocates for Pregnant Women who are truly working on this issue, and not just skimming over issues like this. We can hope that other big named groups such as NOW and NARAL will follow suit.

In light of this real issue, we decided to sit down and talk on the Momotics Radio show this Thursday Night at 10pm EST.  If you don’t know, Gina also has a kick ass radio show herself called The Feminist Breeder and Friends. Tune in Every Sunday night at 10pm CST.  I hope you tune in and join us this Thursday night.

This is not an issue that stops during pregnancy.

For some more cases on pregnant woman’s rights being violated, as well as birthing women, check out the links & video below :

It really all makes you think!

Welcome to the NEW Momotics!

Most know I had been tossing the idea around for a long time about making my blog an actual .com and yesterday with a little extra time, a great friend to help (Sarah from One Starry Night) and the encouragement of everyone on twitter telling me how awesome WordPress is, I made not only the move to wordpress but I purchased the domain name.  While it only ran me a whopping $10.87 I am pretty happy I did it.

I posted a forward over to this blog on the old momotics hosted on blogspot, so I am hoping everyone will slowly make their way over here.

So what is new?  I am going to continue to work on the site over the next couple days, add some pages, some great categories, and just getting used to wordpress, but I will continue to move forward with all the great blog topics I have coming up for the next couple days… which include :

  • A wrap up on Transparency & the  Radio show with Amy Romono.
  • Being a Feminist Stay At Home Mom
  • Teen Pregnancy Rise in America
  • Co-Sleeping/Family Bed & A Healthy Sex Life

Sounds juicy huh?   So stay tuned!

Tonight though, in honor of my giveaway of a Cesarean Recovery Kit from Earth Momma Angel Baby, and me dubbing this week “Cesarean Awareness Week” on the Momotics Blog… I will have Michele from Birthcut.com on the Momotics Radio Show and we will be taking about Post Cesarean Feelings and emotions, and ways that you can work towards recovery from your experience.  Be sure to tune in 10:00pm EST!
Remember… EASTERN STANDARD TIME!  A lot of people get confused so I like to stress that! LOL
