The Problem with Facebook

Ya know, I had another post scheduled for today, but I signed on to facebook, and a friend of mine had shared a post with pictures of women found around the popular networking site. All the pictures are of women with serious breast situations going on.

Lets just call this an example of what facebook considers appropriate vs. inappropriate and obscene…

According to the lovely facebook staff, the above picture is just fine, not offensive, or inappropriate at all. No issues what so ever…

On the other hand, this picture is offensive, and inappropriate content for facebook and was deleted… A baby… sleeping on their mother after falling asleep nursing… THE HORROR!

Appropriate….

Inappropriate…

Appropriate…

Inappropriate and offensive…

Perfectly fine… BTW lady, your bra is showing… ya need a bigger shirt…

Horribly offensive…

Clearly you can see what the problem here is. But I guess that is what we can expect from a bunch of little boys running such a large, and popular website. Bias and lack of common sense rules. And by the way… the pictures I posted above of the women which are considered completely acceptable for the website are the most tame pictures I found. There were downright pornographic pictures of multiple naked women taken from the site, but I made the conservative choice not to put them on my website because I know my readers often have children around when they are reading.

This is a serious problem with this website.

I think facebook needs a little help seeing their hypocrisy!

Ugh I completely agree… and what the hell is up with those women. Do they really think it looks good to have their boobs hanging over their bras like that? Just like when it happens with jeans, try a bigger size.

You should send this link to Facebook!

5

This is just outrageous. I have sent many comments to facebook saying that i think it is ridiculous. Breastfeeding isn’t offensive.. their behavior towards it is.

they clearly have men running facebook sad sad sad nursing shouldn’t be a problem and those girls need a bigger shirt and a shirt period.!

This should be investigated by ABC news.

I’m not surprised after all the hype around breastfeeding photos on FB. But at the same time, it angers me so much that I don’t even know where to start. Seriously, there are some things so skewed in US culture that I don’t know how we’ll ever start living naturally again.

Gah, how do you find it wrong to post a mother feeding her child, or even sleeping in her arms.

Ugh, I agree! Great post. I wish something would be done about this. It’s just WRONG. (Those girls also should really learn how to buy shirts that fit…ha.)

I COMPLETELY agree. I am part of peaceful parenting on fb and ALWAYS see women saying their bf pics are getting deleted. It drives me nuts. But the thing that drives me more crazy is the advertising on the side panel which businesses PAY for. I am a photographer specializing in newborns & children. I also photograph boudoir sessions (like a maxim photo shoot for instance… no nudity). They constantly deny my ads which are completely safe for looking at at work (showing legs for instance) but I then see ads pop up that are advertising sex shops or something similar. I don’t get it.

I don’t condone any of the photo’s to be honest with you. Why are women taking pictures of themselves nursing? Or having pictures taken while nursing? I nurse in public, discreetly, by choice. I understand that not everyone does and seeing it doesn’t offend me. I just don’t get the need for a whole page dedicated to photo’s of women taking pictures of their child nursing. It’s a natural and special time for mom and baby. The whole wold doesn’t need to see it. Do I think that the page should have been deleted, no. Do I think some of the content should have been more modest, yes.

17

Tiffany, for me, I took pictures of me nursing because it was a special moment, and moments as a bonding experience I wanted to share and remember…
Modesty is subjective. What one person thinks is acceptable, the next doesn’t.

19

I totally agree…Im not sure how something as natural as breastfeeding your child is considered offensive but these nasty woman with their triple E’s hanging out is ok!

Facebook is a tool. Their backwards ass thinking is insane. I have seen way worse pictures on facebook than those innocent breastfeeding pictures. I found one picture of a girl who took a naked picture of herself on the toilet and that wasn’t flagged for abuse. Speaking on my befalf I woulnt post pics of me breastfeeding my but I do not see anything wrong with those pictures above of these women breastfeeding. Facebook needs to grow up.

Hi, this is great that you’re making people aware of this but where’s your proof? I mean where’s the original quotes from Facebook? “Facebook said this..” doesn’t really stand up in court. I’d rather comment on something once i’ve seen the whole story.

Then move along… The door is that way —–>

HONESTLY!! IT makes me want to throw-up seeing those images of women being exploited by men! As a mum who breastfed her babies where ever I was and now a grand-ma who totally supports my daughter’s right to breastfeed where ever she wants, I want FB to know that this is NOT acceptable behaviour on their part. How do we let them know is my question? I breastfed in public when there were no “mommy” rooms in malls and public spaces and NO ONE was offended by it back in the 1980′s!I was always discret and never “flashed” my boobs but I always put the comfort of my baby and myself first and formost when feeding. Let’s get good and loud here and let FB and other people know that we are against exploitation of women but totally pro breast feeding. Thanks so much for your site :-)

I had a photo taken down recently because it showed nudity (it was funny and temporary and probably shouldn’t offend anyone outside of America).

What I noticed is that the reason is was taken down is because someone reported it. So someone on your friend list found the image offensive and requested it be dropped.

Which actually makes it more offensive.

I’m not sure Facebook screens all photos. I believe they rely more on people reporting inappropriate content.

Consider this – millions of users, potentially uploading millions of photos a day – highly unlikely that Facebook could possibly have enough staff to screen all that.

What is more likely needed is Facebook to have enough moral backbone to tell users who report such photos to take a flying leap.

I don’t agree with you. Facebook isn’t a place for any of those pictures. I don’t post pictures of myself eating nachos, why would I exploit my child by posting pics of them eating? Whether it be breastfeeding or otherwise. I’m a pregnant woman as well and I just find it gross to look at other woman breastfeeding. Keep it off facebook!

28

@Jessica – I feel sorry for you, as well as your future child… And if you don’t want to see a woman breastfeed… LOOK AWAY!

By: Jen

I’ve had four pics removed so far. I even posted to a ‘group’ on FB that was dedicated to preserving the right to post pics, and the Mod there asked me to remove a pic so that FB wouldn’t shut them down. It’s crazy. But, sex sells and well, breastfeeding is SO not about the horny man behind the computer screen.

This debate makes me laugh. It isn’t that Facebook, or Mark Zuckerberg, are against breastfeeding mothers. It’s the people who report the photos. So if you have a photo on your profile of you breastfeeding your child, and it gets reported – that means it was one of YOUR friends! Unless of course you’re an idiot and have your photos set for all to see. The photos of women with their boobs hanging out just for fun are still there, because nobody has reported it. If you see something, anything, that you find offensive, you’re always welcome to report it.
