Toddlers & Tiaras: How is this NOT Child Abuse?

That is a video of a young child getting her eyebrows waxed. Yes, exactly what every small child needs right… Not only was the little girl crying, and begging not to have the cloth strip ripped off, but then her mother commented that normally she would have held her down while the waxxer ripped it of… Uh… What?

They try and bribe her with a bag of candy, or some kind of treats, and while seeing it for a moment it makes her perk up, but then when she realizes what exactly is going to happen she changes her tune really quick. Screaming, crying, begging… how could someone sit by and watch their child beg not to be put through unnecessary pain like that and continue through with it the way that mother did. I simply cannot wrap my head around it…

Then there is the mom who dressed her daughter up as Madonna… Not the 2010 sweat pants wearing Madonna… or the Mom Madonna… the 1990′s cone boob flaunting, pushing the limit Madonna…

Yes… that right there… The famous cone boob outfit Madonna used to turn heads… And that little girl is three years old… only THREE.

And we wonder why little girls in our country are growing up with these image issues, and huge hang ups regarding breasts and what they are actually for.

I bet you in two years, or even ten years… you ask that little girl what breasts are actually for, and she won’t be able to give you an actual accurate answer… It won’t be anything to do with feeding babies… it will probably be along the lines of impressing judges or attracting men.

Which as a mother who is expecting a daughter really makes me sad. Not just for our society as a whole, but for the little girls who are actually going to be raised with this line of thinking.

I can see the pink clothes, tutu’s, and the girlie kind of things, but where do we draw the line between acceptable and grossly inappropriate.

Personally, I can’t say I have sat down and watched the show, granted I would probably throw something at my television or have a full blow heart attack… but just seeing these small little bits and pieces on the internet, I don’t understand how parents, and even the producers of this show… and child protective services don’t find actions like this a form of serious child abuse.

just wait until you have to buy clothing once they outgrow the toddler clothes. They look like something that I wouldn’t even let a teenager wear, let alone a 4 or 5 year old. This fall, and now as I start to think about summer clothing for my daughter, I dread clothes shopping for her. It is so hard to find anything remotely appropriate for a little girl.

As for Toddler and Tiaras, I watched it once, and it turned my stomach, so I couldn’t watch it anymore. TLC as a whole has turned into a channel that I am finding I can’t stand to watch.

Personally, I believe parents should be licensed, like we do for cars. Although we can’t even get sane gun laws effected. Can you imagine how a proposal like this would go over? lol

Anyone with gonads can reproduce and it is just dead scary to see the results. You have the brutal, like the cretins down South who tortured their toddlers before murdering them last year, and you have the subtle, like these morons, who wax and sexualize their babies. But the end results are the same, along a continuum: insecure, confused children with no sense of boundaries or safety. And, ta da, you then have our current American society, with its culture of sex, greed and violence.

I agree. I wish that these pagents supported the idea that childern should look like childern and NOT young adults. It makes me sick :( That parent is deplorable.

JRMiss86 – THIS! It is so difficult to find appropriate clothing for my (very tall) almost 5 year old daughter. I can’t believe that a clothing designer expects her to wear short booty shorts and mini skirts. Tight t-shirts and tank tops. SHE’S FIVE.

I watched this week’s episode and it wasn’t the cone bra/waxing episode but it was bad in its own way. Dressing up our daughters like prostitutes is NOT acceptable. Ever.

6

This show absolutely horrifies me. This poor little girl also had to fight through them putting false eyelashes on her. This IS child abuse if you ask me :(

OMG- That is absolutely horrible! I am sitting here shaking my head!

These parents are forcing children to perform. It’s horrible. I don’t believe in forcing a child to do an activity. I believe in supporting the activities they choose, but, to make a child cry for something so unecessary, is wrong. While it can’t be called abusive, I don’t agree with it. If it was something truly necessary, like the dentist, that’s a different story. But then again, the dentist can give medication to calm them or even put them out if necessary.

This is completely unacceptable, and Toddlers & Tiaras serves as nothing but gruesome, carnal entertainment. People are watching these little girls get plucked and pruned while they scream and cry and complain. Social services should seriously be looking into shows like these and removing these poor little girls from the care of their horrible parents. Living vicariously through your toddler is not acceptable! What’s worse is that the pageants extend to babies as well… they have a 0-24 month division. I recently saw an episode where a 15 month baby girl was called “horrible” “terrible” and the like by her mother, because she ran around the stage rather than performing like a trained pup. Since when is this what’s best for our kids…?!

As a mother of a little girl who just turned 1, I feel your disgust, JRMISS86. Even buying clothes for her can be difficult. I love little skirts on my baby girl, but I ALWAYS put tights underneath- they’re just too short! Why does our society feel the need to sex up our babies? Don’t the producers of these shows realize that the little girls they feature are probably every pedophile’s fantasy?

Disgusting, if you ask me.

I totally feel the same way. Just watching the commercial makes me so sick! How do they have a show like this without the parents going to jail? This is so wrong and hurtful to children. :(

11

By: Kris

It is the legalized form of child abuse.

By: Karin

I have watched this program several times. I am amazed at what parents will do to be in the spotlight using their kids to get there!
I do feel and believe this is absolute abuse! These children have no desire to be doing this crap. They spend all this time being dressed up and have to deal with things an adult doesn’t often times deal with. They are put on display, and made to feel inferior if they do not win the stupid crown!
It is the PARENTS who want this, not the kids~! ABUSE in my book!

I can’t believe this is not considered child abuse! We watched an episode (Me, my sons and my husband) where they spray tanned very young children for their competition! One girl’s mom brought her to a place where they spray paint cars for them to spray tan her! The mom kept saying how much her daughter liked all the stuff and the whole time the little girl cried, fought it, wanted to leave etc etc. Even my sons- age 10 and 13 were appalled and said they would NEVER have their daughters do that!! This is just sad…..

I can’t believe this show hasn’t been banned and CPS hasn’t been involved. This show is a pediphiles dream. I read the book A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard and the man who took her at age 11 would dress her in little skimpy outfits before he would rape her. These parents allow their daughters to dress in skimpy disturbing outfits for their age group. Also the man that took Jaycee Dugard would watch TV for any little girl to watch, wearing a pair of shorts or tight clothes to get himself “in the mood” before he would rape Jaycee again.

To me one of the saddest aspects of this whole monstrosity is that most of the young mothers are so overweight–they are living vicariously through their children. They need to get themselves in a healthy state so that they can be good role models.

16

By: Laura

All I can say is that showing these poor kids and what some of the mom’s put them through is job security for me since I am completing my Masters in Social Work.
I just know most of these kids are going to need therapy.
I have seen some mothers who have a healthy attitude, and will stop doing pagents when the kid says no.
I cringe at these parents who let the little girls call the shots, it is cute at two, but when your ten year old daughter tells you to “get out of her space.” it is not going to be so cute.

By: kelly

I am horrified of what these moms put their girls (and boys!!OMG) through. If u notice most of the moms are quite overweight n seem to be using their girls n some twisted way to feel beautiful themselves. I also can’t believe the fathers allow the things these precious babies are going through. Its appalling, poor kids

By: aubrey

I can’t beleive this show… not only the torture of getting dressed up but imagine from your earliest memory only being tought that you beauty was your only self worth. Im watching the show right now and the little girl just said “everybody always looks at me because i look pretty and cute” like imagine when these little girls get into school with that attitude they wont have any friends.

I watched the show for the first time while “channel surfing” and could not believe what I was watching! How could any parent be so vain using their young children as “show horses”.

I found it to be so degrating and to have those inocent children look like 20 year olds……………

By: Shiree

This show proves there are way too many crazy parents. The kids are really screwed up too. Not much to say but the thought of WHY SOMEONE WOULD JUDGE THIS?? Rant over.

Disgusting shows like this will keep on going as long as people continue to watch it. Perhaps shows like this would be cut from the airwaves if people would write, call, and e-mail networks that show this stuff and complain. Boycott the entire network. If possible, have these networks removed from your Satellite and Cable plans. Tell the network you plan to call Child Protective Services, Foster Care Organizations, the Police, etc.. and file formal complaints. If you want to really get at them, contact them, tell them you watch the show religiously and are attracted to small children, and tell them you want to meet and spend time with some particular children (just don’t use your real name, use fake e-mail, and fake phone number). Perhaps if they think they have pedophiles scouting their show, they’ll cancel it. If you succeed in getting such debauchery canceled, then you can move on to get these depraved child beauty pageants stopped, too. I don’t buy for one millisecond that these pageants teach kids self-confidence and poise. I’m convinced they actually teach kids that you have to be attractive with perfect figure and features, or you won’t be liked nor successful. It’s sad. Bottom line: if you don’t like abusive, pedophiliac encouraging crap like this–don’t watch it, and take action to stop it.

By: Caroline

Kudos to all parents who let their children BE children and appreciate them in their natural, cute and innocent state.

23

A lot of these parents need to grow a set and discipline their children. They’re being held hostage by their kids and it’s their own fault. so many issues it’s disheartening.

24

By: Kris Fisher

I am astonished that social services doesn’t get involved in this. These people are pathetic, God help their kids when they get older. Disgusting people raising children destined to be equally disgusting in their adulthood. Shameful!

25

By: Linda

Show is about the parents, not the kids! Child abuse x’10-these kids will grow about with low self esteem, poor body images, eating disorders, and will equate their looks as being successful, and negate the importance of their brains, a good education, inner beauty, and good morals and values as the path to being a successful human being. The parents should be ashamed of themselves, and TLC should be ashamed for airing it-boy, what people will do to earn a buck, even at the expense of their children! I am disgusted!

I have always watched Toddlers and Tiara’s and had a chuckle or two, but not any more. After watching last nights episode with the Russian mother, who is obviously mentally ill, I just felt incredibly sad. The little girl was amazingly well adjusted, despite her mother’s repeated tantrums, loud blaming of judges for “hating” her daughter, and other odd behavior. The other little girl doing a hootchie dance to a Shirley Temple song iced it for me. How do I sign up to make this whole beauty pageant scenario illegal and term it child abuse. Discusting.

By: Misty

This show should be cancelled. The moms are selfish and sick.I feel sorry for the little girls. The mothers should be ashamed of themselves.Making little girls do this should be against the law.TLC makes me sick as well for putting up with these mothers making these girls look like trash and letting these crazy mothers be own the show. The girls do not care if they win it is a power trip for the mothers.I notice the fathers have no say so they need to man up and give a reality check to the wives but u can tell the wives wear the pants in the marriage.

By: danny

This is a disgusting show. These so called parents should he ashamed of them selves. It makes me sad and sick to know these parents parade their children around in these adult costumes. I would be ashamed of my twenty year old if she wore these outfits. I hope this show is cancelled soon. Signed a concerned American father

I don’t watch this show. I think it’s gross. I wonder if ANY of these mothers think about what kinds of people are watching their children. There are SEX OFFENERS and PEDOPHILES that just live for this. I would be totally grossed out if I thought someone like that might be looking at my child.
