I often find myself questioned what a doula is when I name that as my job title.
“I am a Stay at home Mother, and a Doula” “A what?”
The word Doula is taken from the ancient Greek term, “woman’s servant” or “woman’s slave.
In today’s society a doula may not be common, but it is slowly working its way into the public eye and delivery room.
Giving birth to a child is so much more than just a physical phenomenon; it engages parents-to-be in a transformational experience. A key life event full of emotion and meaning. Not just another medical procedure that turns you into a sick patient in a hospital. Hospitals are for sick people…. right?
A doula who accompanies a woman in labor mothers the mother, taking care of her emotional needs, and sometimes physical (non medical) through the birth experience.
A doula also provides support and suggestions for partners that can enhance their experiences of birth.
A postpartum doula continues that valuable emotional support, care, and guidance, helping a family make a smooth transition into the new family dynamic.
I know that probably sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo, but it is really as simple as I can put it. The role of a doula touches so many aspects and bases in care, birthing, motherhood, and care that you really can’t explain and put into words everything one does.
Kind of like you can never explain motherhood or a mothers role.
